As a beginner you will be gradually introduced to the principles of Aikido

On your first visit(s) a senior student will welcome you onto the mat and make sure you 'know the ropes', especially regarding safety and unfamiliar language and etiquette. You will also be shown basic evasive movements and introduced to methods of movement and falling which will keep you safe when you practise aikido.

Aikido is a non-competitive martial art. This means there are no individual contests as in many other martial arts, and no competitions. There is, however, a grading system. After some time, you may be invited by your teacher to take a formal grading.

There are several half day-long courses held each year by the Lancashire Aikikai, hosted by the clubs within the association. These are an enjoyable opportunity for an intensive day of Aikido where you can practise with students from other clubs and receive instruction from senior teachers including the Principal of our organisation, Sensei Bob Spence (7th Dan).

toughen the body and polish the spirit. "
